Let the work begin

Danny and his crew began work that following Monday and we were off. Every day seemed like we were getting closer and closer to our dream. We had our space, we had ordered our product and renovation had begun. Our days were filled with checking on the guys at the store and then running around town to order this and look at that. Jenny and I spent nearly every waking moment together and began to finish each others sentences. If we weren't together then we were on the phone with each other discussing the next thing we needed to do. I am so thankful to have such a wonderful partner and don't think I could do it without her. It is so helpful to have someone to make decisions with and to be there for encouragement.

May I have a permit please?

It is March 13, 2008. Permit day. Danny (our contractor) and I are going to attempt to go down to the city and get our building permit. I am very nervous because I have heard horror stories about how long it can take to get a permit in the city. We did not have any time to waste, we were on a tight timetable because we were trying to get this construction finished before Mid-May. There was no time to waste and so I went with Danny down to city hall. I came to find out later that this is not normal and usually contractors do not want their client coming with them. I just wanted to make sure that everything went ok and wanted to be there in case there was any sort of crisis. Danny never objected, but did say after the fact that I was the first person to ever go with him to get the permit. I didn't know any better. I thought being there and bringing every single piece of documentation about the store would help. I wasn't too concerned at that point if this wasn't normal...I just needed my permit. And 3 hours later after talking to 4 different people who all seemed to wonder why I was there, we received our permit - on our first try. Must be a sign, right?

Decisions, Decisions

During the process of getting the architectural drawings we had to make decisions on exactly how the space would look on the fly. Leave the ceiling exposed or not? Track lighting or recessed? Where should the counter go? What type of trim work? What type of flooring? Little did we know that all of this information had to be included in the architectual plans.... Atleast we had some help during the process. Some of the best money we spent in the build-out process was purchasing SmartDraw - a room layout program. We were able to layout the space and then tell the architect exactly how we wanted everything. This saved us time and money because he then just had to re-create exactly what we wanted.

Jenny is on her honeymoon so I am trying to get everything together we need in order to start the renovation of our space. First things first, we need a permit to begin construction. We did not think that our changes were that significant, but I guess we were wrong because much to our dismay we need architectural drawings for our space. Are you kidding me? Drawings? We are tearing up carpet, painting walls, building some cabinets and yes moving a wall or two, but do we really need to have an architect?

This was just the first of several construction items we did no budget for. :) Lucky for us we found a faboulous architect who was super quick. He came out and met us at the space and had drawings to us within a week, can y0u believe that? I guess we won't be too off schedule....
